Piezoelectric technology has been extensively applied in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery.
Only recently have piezoelectric devices designed for oral and maxillofacial surgery appeared in the market. Piezoelectric devices produce ultrasound vibrations and inflict micrometric cuts only on mineralized tissues, leaving the surrounding soft tissues unaffected. Their cutting action includes bone perforation, micrometric osteotomy, horizontal osteotomy, membrane separation from bony walls. Piezoelectric application in oral and maxillofacial surgery offers surgical precision, intra-operative sensitivity and a blood-free surgical site thus providing maximum intra-operative visibility. Piezoelectric technology is a promising tool for osteotomy and osteoplasty in oral surgery, implantology, periodontology and surgical endodontics; is simple to apply, reduces morbidity and increases the overall dental treatment quality provided to our patients.
